Building Permits

Pittsylvania County Community Development requires building permits for a variety of residential and commercial projects. These requirements are in place to ensure that all structures are safe and adhere to the standards provided in the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code. Enforcement of the USBC ensures that the minimum standards required for the construction of structures is met in order to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public.

Generally speaking, you will need a building permit for new construction, as well as many renovation, replacement, and conversion projects.

You can submit a building permit application in person at 53 North Main Street, Chatham, VA 24531, via fax to 434-432-7919, or via email

Many construction projects, and particularly new construction and development, will require multiple permits. Don't hesitate to contact our office with questions about what building permits you need for your project.
