Gas Permits

A property owner needs a gas permit for the removal, replacement or installation of any gas appliances or equipment, including piping, gas logs, water heaters, and furnaces. This excludes replacement stoves, dryers, and cook tops. A gas permit is also needed for the installation of a new propane tank or the replacement of a propane tank in a different location or of a different capacity.

All gas permits and inspections are completed in accordance with the Virginia Fuel Gas Code.

Below are a few examples of when a gas permit may be needed:

  • Boilers, furnaces, or water heaters
  • Generator installation
  • Conversion from propane to natural gas or natural gas to propane
  • Pool/hot tub heaters
  • Commercial fryer, grill, or oven installation

After the issuance of a permit, there will typically be a few inspections at different phases of the process. A fee of $50.90 is charged for residential gas permits.
