With Pittsylvania County covering approximately 1,000 square miles, Pittsylvania County Schools has 20 schools with approximately 8,000 students attending. Based on student population, Pittsylvania County is the 30th (out of 132) largest school division in Virginia. Pittsylvania County Schools (PCS) embraces the concept of continuous improvement. All schools complete annual improvement plans, participate in the Virginia Tiered Systems of Support (VTSS) School Climate Grants, and focus on quality education for all students.
Pittsylvania County Schools consistently exceeds the State standards in test scores, and all schools are fully accredited by the Virginia Department of Education. This represents 10 elementary schools, four middle schools and four high schools. PCS has also been recognized as having Blue Ribbon Schools at Mount Airy Elementary, Tunstall High and most recently at Union Hall Elementary. PCS has been repeatedly recognized by the Southern Virginia Technology Council with the following awards: Leadership in Education Award, Leadership in Telecommunications Infrastructure Award and Leadership in Government.
