Budget and Finance
The Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors manages a complex budget totaling approximately $200 million. Many of these funds are “pass-through” funds from the State and Federal government and are allocated for very specific purposes.
Other revenues are generated locally through a variety of taxes on residents and property owners as well as taxes on businesses.
With the help of the County Finance Department and County Administration, the Board manages a $70 million general fund, which covers local investments in education and human services and is used for all debt payments, public safety and justice services, and general government.
Financially, some of the Board’s key financial priorities include:
- Increasing local contributions to education
- Improving the County’s financial health
Fiscal 2024 Budget Highlights
During the 2024 fiscal year, which begins July 1, 2023, and runs through June 30, 2023, Pittsylvania County is operating with a general fund budget of more than $79 million. The fiscal 2024 budget did not include a real estate tax increase and utilized the last certified real estate values (2018). The total budget is approximately $232.9 million, which is $14 million more than the fiscal 2023 budget, and most of this increase comes from state and federal funds.
In the 2024 fiscal year, about 16% of total general fund expenditures are for general governance and 11% is for debt payments. Another 28% is for education and 32% is for justice and public safety.
