Mechanical Permits

Mechanical permits are needed for the first-time installation of any mechanical appliances or the replacement of any gas or oil-fueled mechanical appliances. A permit is needed for the addition, relocation, or removal of any of the following:

  • Air-conditioning systems
  • Ventilation systems
  • Refrigeration systems
  • Exhaust systems
  • Furnaces
  • Mechanical Fixtures
  • Duct work

All mechanical permits and inspections in Pittsylvania County are conducted in accordance with the Virginia Mechanical Code.

Replacement of these elements of the same type, size, and location don’t require a permit. For instance, you do not need a mechanical permit to replace your refrigerator; however, one would be needed if you wanted to move the location of the refrigeration system within your home. Equipment fueled by gas would need a permit.

In most cases, two inspections will be needed. The first will occur during the mechanical rough-in phase, which is after all the ductwork and piping are installed but before the insulation and wallboard are installed. The next inspection will occur when all equipment is installed and operational.

The Pittsylvania County Building Inspections Department charges a $45.00 fee for any residential mechanical permit.
