Pittsylvania County, VA

Inspections MUST be scheduled by 5 p.m. at least 24 hours before you need the inspection. Office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. The inspectors are in the office from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily. It is during those times that you will be able to speak with your inspector regarding a specific inspection or code question. 

A minimum advance notice of 24 hours is required for all inspections. The permit holder shall assure the following inspections are conducted and approved by the building inspector. Uniform Statewide Building Code (USBC) 113.3 required inspections:

• Inspection of footing excavations and reinforcement material for concrete footings prior to the placement of concrete.
• Inspection of foundation systems during phases of construction necessary to assure compliance with this code.
• Inspection of preparatory work prior to the placement of concrete. Inspection of structural members and fasteners prior to concealment.
• Inspection of electrical, mechanical and plumbing materials and systems prior to concealment.
• Inspection of energy conservation material prior to concealment.

The Community Development Department is implementing a new fee schedule effective July 15. Most of the updates are minor, but below are some of the major changes:

• All electrical permits will require the number of outlets being installed, as well as the ampere for altered or new services.
• Mechanical permits will require the cost of the job. If part of a new home construction, the cost of the mechanical portion will be required to calculate fees.
• The fee calculations for commercial plan review and structural permits has changed, basing the cost of the total cost of the job.

A copy of the operational permit issued by the Pittsylvania County Health Department must be provided to the Pittsylvania County Building Inspections Office by the contractor / owner before a certificate of occupancy can be issued.

Well and septic completion statements must be turned in to the Pittsylvania County Health Department before the Certificate of Occupancy may be issued.

Any reinspection fees must be paid before the power company will be notified of approval to connect power.
