Concealed Handgun Permits

Application Process

Any person at least 21 years old may apply in writing to the Clerk of the Circuit Court. Permits are good for 5 years. The following are required to obtain a concealed handgun permit:

  • A copy of driver’s license or state issued ID with your current address
  • Proof that the applicant has taken an in-person handgun safety course
  • Or, for someone looking to renew their permit, a copy of the current permit must be submitted to the Clerk’s Office.

The total fee for permit is $50.00 and may be paid by cash, check, credit or debit card. Please note that a 4% convenience fee is required for credit and debit card payments.

Virginia Code 18.2-308 provides some disqualifications for a concealed handgun permit.

Initial Permit

A copy of the application can be downloaded from our website, or you can pick up a copy at the Pittsylvania Circuit Court Clerk’s Office. Once you have completed the application, you can take it or mail it to the Pittsylvania Circuit Court Clerk’s Office. You must show government issued identification with proof of Pittsylvania County residency and proof of competence with a handgun as required by the Code of Virginia.

When completed, the permit will be mailed (if a self-addressed & stamped envelope is provided). Otherwise, the permit will need to be picked up. The Clerk of Court will provide additional permit status information as needed by mail.

Permit Renewal

Concealed carry permits expire after five years. To renew your permit, you will need to show your current permit a copy of your driver's license and complete an application. You will also need to pay the $50 permit fee again.

Name & Address Change

Those who either have a name or residence change will need to update the information on their concealed carry permit. Applicants may come into the Clerk’s office and fill out the information change form. They will need to provide their license or a copy. The fee for this filing is $10.

Lost or Stolen Permit

Applicant’s may fill out this form at their Clerk’s office. The fee for this filing is $5.
