The Pittsylvania County Public Safety Department coordinates emergency services with the 21 volunteer fire departments and 12 volunteer EMS stations spread throughout the county. Our career public safety, emergency management, and dispatch staff work closely with volunteers from all over Pittsylvania County who provide fire and rescue services around the clock. With such a diverse, geographically spread team of volunteer fire departments, rescue squads, and stations that offer both services, coordination is essential to ensure that emergencies are responded to quickly by the appropriate personnel.

Over 1,000 volunteers spend their time running calls and responding to emergencies at all times of the day and night, but running calls isn't all they do. From managing the stations and keeping equipment operating smoothly to completing hundreds of hours of continued training, these volunteers sacrifice much of their time to keep county citizens and businesses safe.

Because these individual volunteers and departments play such a vital role in keeping the community safe, Pittsylvania County invests significant funding to help these agencies operate and purchase new equipment when needed.
