Pittsylvania County Public Safety operates a 911 Center to respond to 911 calls and dispatch the appropriate resources to those emergencies. Pittsylvania County’s 911 Center is operated by a minimum of three dispatchers at all times.

Pittsylvania County Public Safety currently employs a 911 Manager, an Administrative Services Coordinator, 16 full-time dispatchers, and 4 part-time dispatchers.

Some of the daily tasks and responsibilities of Pittsylvania County’s dispatchers include:

  • Receive law enforcement, fire and EMS and related service request and calls; dispatch emergency equipment and personnel where and when needed
  • Receive, classify, process, and dispatch emergency service calls; supervise all aspects of communications operations; receive, record, and forward non-emergency service calls; prepare and maintaining computerized and other records and files
  • Operate radios, telecommunications equipment, recording devices, computer terminals, and record procedures
  • Operate a Computer-Aided Dispatch System. Our dispatchers obtain certifications for these protocols through the National Academy of Priority Dispatch. Re-certification must be obtained every two years.
  • Performs Emergency Medical, Emergency Fire, Emergency Police, and Pre-arrival instructions related to E-911 Calls for Service. (Certification Required at all times)

The 911 Center coordinates with and dispatches for a variety of organizations and agencies, including:
