The Pittsylvania County Fire Marshal's Office provides free annual inspections to any business located within the County. Per the Pittsylvania County Fire Code, which is based on the Statewide Fire Prevention Code, every business must have an annual inspection. Many State regulating agencies also require these local inspections.

Residential structures, farm buildings, and churches (except for those that host a daycare) are all exempt from the annual fire inspection requirement.

What Do the Fire Inspectors Look For?

When conducting an inspection, the Fire Marshal will look for a variety of things. The specifics vary depending on the type of business, but the goal is always to ensure that the company is properly protecting its property and constituents from fire spread.

Below are some of the items on the fire marshal's inspection checklist:

Fire Extinguishers are updated, inspected, and installed properly
Extension cords are not used improperly
If used, space heaters are plugged in properly and are not too close to anything flammable
Proper and functional exit signage, smoke detectors, and, where applicable, sprinkler systems
Complete evacuation plans
