Bringing the world home to Pittsylvania County

Pittsylvania County is committed to expanding the availability of reliable and affordable high speed internet access for its residents. To meet that goal, Pittsylvania County has partnered with RiverStreet Networks, which specializes in serving rural communities. 

Through a series of state and federal grants and additional funding sources totaling more than $91 million, Pittsylvania County and Pittsylvania County Schools, along with RiverStreet, is in the process of installing fiber optic cable throughout the county as part of a multi-phase, multi-year project.

This broadband initiative, now underway, will bring fiber optic cable to more than 16,500 homes and businesses in Pittsylvania County. As part of this project, RiverStreet plans to install more than 1,500 miles of fiber optic cable in Pittsylvania County. Fiber optic cable is the fastest, most reliable form of internet delivery.

The project includes burying the fiber, which has the advantage of being immune to weather outages. Burying the fiber, however, is a lengthier process.
