School Resource Officers

The Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office employees school resource officers to serve across Pittsylvania County Schools.

As defined Virginia Code § 9.1-101, a school resource officer (SRO) is a certified law enforcement officer hired by local law enforcement agencies to provide law enforcement and security services to public schools. To serve as an SRO, a deputy must be certified as a law enforcement officer in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Any SRO must have specific training directly related to:

  • Prevention and detection of crime
  • Enforcement of penal, traffic, or highway laws as they relate to public schools

These officers can be assigned to work in one or more schools, and they must remain under administrative control of the law enforcement agency that they are employed by.

Their primary duty is to provide law enforcement and security services to public schools.
