Memorial

The Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office has a monument right in downtown Chatham for members of the Sheriff's Department that have lost their lives in the line of duty or as a result of injuries sustained in the line of duty. Located to the left of the front steps of the County courthouse, the monument honors eight law enforcement personnel that served Pittsylvania County at different points over the past 94 years.

Those honored include:
  • Deputy Sheriff Frankie L. Betterton, died May 17, 2002
  • Investigator Terry Barker, died December 8, 2001
  • Deputy Sheriff Eugene McBride, died November 2, 1969
  • Deputy Sheriff J. Holland Thomas Sr., died March 31, 1956
  • Constable William Coward, died May 29, 1939
  • Constable David Payne, died October 30, 1936
  • Deputy Sheriff James Bryant, died January 26, 1936
  • Deputy Sheriff George Williams Sr., died January 16, 1928
