Victim/Witness Assistance Program
A vital program within the Office of the Commonwealth Attorney, the Victim/Witness Program enhances the attorney’s ability to prosecute crime and seek justice for victims. This program assists both crime victims and witnesses of the County of Pittsylvania through the criminal justice system. It supports and helps those who are emotionally, financially, and physically injured or impacted by a crime.
The purpose of the Pittsylvania County Victim/Witness Assistance Program is to aid crime victims and witnesses according to Virginia Code Section 19.2-11.01 while assuring that they are treated with dignity, respect, and sensitivity and have their privacy protected to the extent permissible under law.
Some of the Services Offered:
- INFORMATION about your case, including updates on the investigation, court date (s), the outcome, and parole.
- EXPLANATION of court procedures, your role as a witness, and/or a tour of the courtroom before you testify.
- ESCORT to and from court.
- REIMBURSEMENT for out-of-town travel expenses relating to your court appearance.
- EMPLOYER INTERCESSION as it relates to your case.
- CRISIS COUNSELING and REFERRAL to social service agencies and counseling agencies.
- ASSISTANCE in preparing a Victim Impact Statement which describes the effect the crime has had on your life or that of your family.
- ASSISTANCE in filing for compensation with the Virginia Victim’s Fund.
- ASSISTANCE in obtaining court ordered restitution from the defendant if you have suffered financial loss.
- INFORMATION about protection from threats by the offender or anyone else.
- INFORMATION and assistance with filing Protective Orders and warrants.
