Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)

The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program provides eligible families with a monthly cash payment to meet their basic needs. For a child to be eligible they must be:

  • Under the age 18, or if 18, but not yet 19, enrolled and attending a secondary school or vocational/technical school of secondary equivalency and meeting the enrollment and attendance requirements
  • Living with a parent or other relative
  • A U.S. citizen or an eligible immigrant

Participants may be provided with services such as job skills training, work experience, job readiness training, childcare assistance, transportation, and other work-related expenses.

There are changes that may affect your participation in TANF, such as changes in income, employment, education, training, transportation, and childcare. The following changes must be reported within 10 days from the date that they occur

  • Address change
  • A child, including a newborn, or the father or mother of the child enters or leaves your home
  • All the income for your household before taxes goes over the income limits listed on the attached Change Report form.

A Change Report may be sent to our office or completed online, through CommonHelp. Also, forms (including the Change Report) may be accessed via the VDSS public site.
