The vast majority of convenience centers and greenbox sites in Pittsylvania County are open and available to the public 24/7. The seven sites below are open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily due to higher volume: 

• Mount Hermon Convenience Center
• Mount Cross Convenience Center
• Brosville Convenience Center
• Berry Hill Convenience Center
• Blairs Convenience Center
• Level Run Convenience Center
• Climax Convenience Center

In the event that all of the boxes and the compactor at a site fill up when no trucks are available to refresh the site, Solid Waste staff may need to close a site temporarily. Signs posted outside each convenience center direct County residents to other nearby sites. 

Residents are allowed to dispose of furniture and appliances in the “B” containers at County convenience centers. These boxes are clearly marked with the sign pictured below and are only for large and bulky items, such as furniture and appliances. The boxes that are marked "A" are intended for loose or bagged household trash. 

Bulky items must be placed inside the appropriate container.

County residents are prohibited from leaving any home furniture (couches, chairs, bed frames, and mattresses) on the ground at any Pittsylvania County convenience centers. Leaving furniture on the ground at a site is considered littering and is punishable with a class 1 misdemeanor.

The following convenience centers have containers for the collection of newsprint, cardboard, aluminium, and types 1 and 2 plastics:

These convenience centers allow for recycling of mixed paper, cardboard, and newsprint, but do not have the ability to accept plastics.

• Blairs Convenience Center
• Kentuck Convenience Center
• Sutherlin Convenience Center

To maintain an efficient operation, Pittsylvania County Solid Waste maintains different boxes for different types of waste. 

• "A:" These boxes are intended for general household garbage, bagged or un-bagged. 
• "B:" These boxes are to be used for large furniture and appliances.

Tires are not accepted at the County convenience centers, but tires are accepted at the landfill. They are placed in a designated area away from household garbage until they can transferred to a recycling facility. The cost is $3 per tire, and the tire must be removed from the rim.

Tires cannot be left at convenience centers because County staff would need to separate them from regular household trash. If mixed with trash and then buried in the landfill, whole tires occupy large volumes of landfill space. They do not readily compact and can flex back to the surface after burial. The only way a tire won't migrate toward the surface is if you shred it. The County does not currently have the ability to shred tires, therefore they are stored in a designated area until they can be delivered to an appropriate facility to be shredded and recycled. Mixing tires in with household garbage would add an unnecessary cost burden to the citizens and creates safety issues for landfill personnel.

No, you cannot dispose of yard debris and brush at Pittsylvania County convenience centers. Brush and yard debris are accepted at the landfill. We have a designated area for brush located away from regular household garbage to prevent mixing of the two.

The reason yard debris and brush cannot be left at our convenience centers or greenbox sites is vegetative debris is very bulky and would take up a lot of space in our collection boxes. This would result in additional truck trips for each site and a higher cost burden to County taxpayers. 

County residents cannot leave oils (such as cooking, engine, transmission, hydraulic, etc.) at Pittsylvania County convenience centers. 

Oils are accepted at the Pittsylvania County landfill. Notify the scale's attendant so they can direct you to the storage area. Large drums must be scheduled in advance so we can ensure proper handling. Call 434-432-7980 and select Option 1 to coordinate delivery.

Generally, County residents can dispose of paints and stains at any of the convenience centers. 

Remove the lid and let it sit out of the weather. You can also pour the paint over a piece of wood and allow the liquid to completely dry. Once it solidifies, it is allowed to be disposed of at any large box convenience center or at the landfill.

Contaminants, fluids, paints, and oils are all prohibited from entering any convenience centers in the county. Collection boxes are not sealed containers; therefore, liquids placed in containers may spill from the container onsite and during transport. This would cause a risk to citizens and the environment.

Several sites (listed below) accept donations of merchandise for the Pittsylvania Pet Center. Those items are cleaned and sold at the Doggie Bag Thrift Store. a joint venture between the Pet Center and the SPCA of Pittsylvania County. 

These convenience centers accept donations for the Doggie Bag Thrift Store: 

• Mount Hermon
• Smith Mountain Lake
• Mount Cross Road

Due to the cleaning requirements, do not accept clothes as donations.

Clothing is permitted to be disposed of at any of our convenience centers. Clothing is not accepted as a donation, however. Several sites (listed below) accept donations that go to the Pittsylvania Pet Center (and are then sold at the Doggie Bag Thrift Store), but clothing/cloth material must be sanitized prior to being resold and the Pet Center/Doggie Bag Thrift Store does not have the capability to properly sanitize clothing items. Goodwill and Salvation Army are options for such donations.

It is unlawful to scavenge or attempt to salvage materials from waste delivered to or deposited at a solid waste convenience center or the landfill. Scavenging includes dumpster diving or taking things from the convenience centers or the landfill. Scavenging is illegal activity and will result in a class 1 misdemeanor.
