Surrender an Animal

As the County's animal shelter, we provide shelter for all homeless and unwanted animals in the Pittsylvania County. If a pet-owner can no longer care for their animal(s), we will accept owner surrenders by appointment only.

The reason that we only accept owner-surrenders by appointment only is because we strive to remain a no-kill shelter.

Surrendering your pet to us should be your last resort. Please explore other rehoming options, such as reaching out to friends, family, or co-workers, before surrendering your animal to the Pet Center.

You can complete the surrender application process described below or online

Animal Surrender Process

  1. Call and make an appointment

  4. Provide complete vet records for your pet, including rabies vaccination
  5. Complete form describing animal's behavior and temperament
  6. Pay the surrender fee of $25-$50.

Additional Surrender Information

If you need assistance with food, we are happy to help you! Contact the Pet Center at (434) 432-1989 ext. 102 to see if we have any pet food available for you to take. If you can donate a little bit, we surely appreciate it.

If you need to surrender your pet(s), you must schedule an appointment. Please note that we schedule owner surrender appointments to maintain our space and the number of animals that we have coming in. Please be advised that your appointment may be scheduled 2-4 weeks out.

We take owner surrender appointments on Tuesday-Thursday between 9-11 am only. If you arrive late, you will be asked to reschedule your appointment.

There is a surrender fee between $25- $50. This helps us offset some of the medical expenses of the pet. Please bring any vaccine paperwork you have and any medical that the pet is on. Upon surrendering your pet, you will have to fill out a behavioral form.

If you need to surrender your animal, email jenna.creasy@pittgov.org or call her office at 434-432-1989 ext. 105.
