Fire and Rescue Commission

After years of planning, the Pittsylvania County Fire and Rescue Commission was created in 2019 to work with the Public Safety Department to provide recommendations and oversee strategic planning for all fire and emergency medical services provided in Pittsylvania County.

Members of this board are appointed by the Board of Supervisors for four-year terms.

"It is the mission of the Pittsylvania County Fire and Rescue Commission to continually improve and seek excellence in fire and rescue services through a “one service, one team” approach encompassing the Board of Supervisors, the Commission, County Staff and the County’s volunteer fire and rescue agencies that meet the needs of the County's citizens while remaining cost-efficient."

Tunstall District Supervisor Vic Ingram and Fire & Rescue Association Member Dean Fowler are non-voting members of the Fire and Rescue Commission.

In total, the Commission consists of 11 voting members. This includes seven fire and rescue representatives, one from each election district of the county, and four citizen representatives from the four quadrants.  Currently, the Staunton River District member seat is vacant. The fire and rescue representatives are appointed by their corresponding member of the Board of Supervisors. The citizen representatives are appointed by the fire and rescue agencies. A member of the Board of Supervisors and the Fire and Rescue Association also serve as non-voting members.

The commission serves as a partner with the Department of Public Safety, assisting with the development of capital improvement and annual budget projects and helping coordinate collaboration between the volunteer fire companies and rescue squads and all county emergency responders. Collectively with the Public Safety Department, the Fire and Rescue Commission serves as a centralized unit responsible to the Board of Supervisors for all fire and EMS issues throughout Pittsylvania County.
