The Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office is hiring! We are looking for deputies to join our team. Duties include jail, patrol, court security, and civil processes. We cross-train all of our deputies, meaning that you will be able to obtain at least two certifications from the Virginia Department of Corrections. 

When you work with the Sheriff's Office, you can expect:

Qualifications

Be a citizen of the united states, be 21 years of age, high school graduate or equivalent. Must posses a valid Virginia operators license with a good driving record. Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively with respect for the rights of others. Ability to write reports and make oral presentations. Must pass all phases of the deputy sheriff application process. Please refer to pre-employment guidelines in application packet and/or via website. Pay consideration given to Virginia certified, experienced officers and qualified, Spanish speaking individuals.

Special requirements

Testing: all applicants who qualify will report to the sheriff’s office testing location on prearranged dates to complete a written entry level test, physical test, and must submit to a full background investigation including polygraph examination, psychological exam, physical examination and drug screening subsequent to conditional offer of employment.

Miscellaneous information

Earn while you learn: qualified candidates hired and accepted to the training academy will be paid a salary of $47,055.27. Plus, a financial incentive sign on bonus $4,500 ($3000 upon hiring, $500 on each consecutive anniversary date up to 48 months or $4,500) in addition, candidates will receive benefits including life insurance, health insurance, sick leave and paid vacation.

Minimum Requirements for Deputy Sheriff and Full Time Civilian Appointees

All applicants must meet the following minimum requirements for appointment 
consideration: 

  • Be a citizen of the United States for Deputy Sheriff’s (Code of Virginia 15.2-
    1705); Civilian Support Staff must have a legal right to work in the United States. 
  • Be 21 years of age for Deputy Sheriff’s, 18 years of age for Civilian Support 
    Staff. 
  • Have a high school education or have passed the General Educational 
    Development exam (GED). 
  • Posses a valid Virginia driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle. 
  • Successfully complete physical agility course for Deputy Sheriff’s. 
  • Successfully complete a reading comprehension test for Deputy Sheriff’s. 
  • Must submit to oral panel interview. 
  • Must submit to a polygraph examination. 
  • Undergo a background investigation including fingerprint-based criminal history 
    records inquiries to both the Central Criminal Records exchange and the Federal 
    Bureau of Investigations. 
  • Not have been convicted of or pleaded guilty or no contest to a felony or any 
    offense that would be a felony if committed in Virginia. 
  • Undergo a physical examination conducted under the supervision of a licensed 
    physician subsequent to a conditional offer of employment. 
  • Not to have produced a positive result on a pre-employment drug screening 
    subsequent to a conditional offer of employment.
