Reports To:             Solid Waste Manager

Summary of PositionEnsures that the County fleet, solid waste dumpsters and landfill equipment are safe and operable by performing necessary repairs as directed by the Solid Waste Manager. Performs various other duties at the Solid Waste Management Facility.

  • Ensures that vehicles are safe and operable by conducting inspections and performing necessary preventive maintenance such as changing engine oil, filters, greasing chassis, repairing brakes.
  • Uses welding and cutting tools to make repairs on Solid Waste Collection and Disposal equipment.
  • Performs manual labor and assists in vehicle repairs as necessary.
  • Keeps records on repairs and maintenance of equipment and responsible for ordering the necessary supplies.
  • Ensures that the County welding garage and shop area are safe and orderly.
  • Performs related tasks as directed by the supervisor.

 

Required Knowledge and Skills:  Capable of interacting courteously and effectively with the public and co-workers. The ability to work under minimum supervision. Understand warning labels and symbols.  Must be able to perform physical labor and follow written and verbal directions.  Thorough knowledge of motor vehicle repairs including knowledge of heavy and light equipment, knowledge of diesel engines and knowledge of welding techniques.  Must possess a valid Virginia Commercial Driver’s License, Class A.

 

Education and Experience: Education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school, including courses in motor vehicle maintenance and a variety of vocational skills. Experience as a welder, or certification from an accredited welding class or program, and experience at fabricating metal containers and repairing light and heavy equipment.

 

Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements:  This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing, tasting or smelling and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and exposure to the risk of electrical shock and occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

 

Certifications and licenses: Possession of an appropriate valid commercial driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.  Virginia state inspection certification preferred; or obtained within six (6) months of date of hire.
