The Tunstall District Volunteer Fire department was founded in the early 1960s by a group of more than 90 men who came together with the goal of providing fire protection to the communities of Bachelors Hall, Brosville, Mount Cross, Tunstall, and Westover. Originally chartered as a large Department with multiple stations located in Sharon, Mount Cross, Bachelor's Hall, Brosville, and Westover communities, multiple smaller agencies - including Brosville Volunteer Fire and Rescue, Mount Cross Volunteer Fire Department, and Riverbend Volunteer Fire Department, were formed.

Tunstall became a first responder agency in 1990 since, at that time, the closest emergency services squad was 30 miles away. In 1995, the agency became an advanced life support transport agency and officially became Tunstall Fire and Rescue. Today, Tunstall Volunteer Fire and Rescue agency provides fire and EMS service for approximately 45 square miles in the southwestern portion of southwest Pittsylvania County. In fiscal year 2021, Tunstall Fire and Rescue has maintained a 99% response rate for fire and EMS services
