Responsibilities

The Clerk of the Circuit Court has a wide range of responsibilities. As the keeper of the records of Pittsylvania County from 1767 to the present, the clerk is responsible for:

  • Concealed handgun permits
  • Divorces
  • Name changes
  • Adoptions
  • Marriage licenses
  • Civil filings (excluding small claims and landlord tenant matters)
  • Abstracts of judgement
  • Probate and estate administration
  • Recording of wills.
  • All land recordings to include deeds; deeds of trust; plats and maps; certificates of satisfaction and powers of attorney.
  • Criminal cases to include all felonies and grand jury indictments as well as General District Court Appeals.
  • All Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court appeals.

The Clerk of the Circuit Court is a constitutional office and is elected by the citizens for an 8 year term.
