Pittsylvania County Breaks Ground on New Animal Shelter

On September 1, 2016, Pittsylvania County celebrated its groundbreaking on the new animal shelter.  Pittsylvania County Board Chairman, Jessie Barksdale, spoke at the ground breaking ceremony for the County’s new animal shelter located on U.S. 29, just north of Chatham Middle School.  Other attendees who spoke during the ground breaking include: Clarence Monday, County Administrator; Mark Narron, Animal Shelter Manager; Cathryn East, President of the SPCA of Pittsylvania County and Debra Dodson, Executive Director for the Community Foundation of the Dan River Region.  As of Thursday, donations to Pittsylvania County is now underway. So far, $60,000 has been donated to the fund through The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region of which $50,000 was from an anonymous donor, and $10,000 from Elton Blackstock, Staunton River District Supervisor, in honor of his dog, Mason. 

Residents were encouraged to help in any way with this project through participation in fundraisers, donations to The Community Foundation’s fund, or volunteerism once the new shelter opens.  Construction should officially begin Wednesday, September 7, 2016 with completion estimated within eight to nine months.  Full construction is expected to be $3.24 million and total project cost at $4.11 million (which includes the $600,000 for the 11-acre land purchase and $270,000 for the architectural study.
